Women's Lacrosse Tops Sacred Heart, 17-3

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team defeated Sacred Heart University, 17-3, on Tuesday evening at Alumni Stadium. Senior co-captain Lauren Miller scored four goals and added four assists to lead the offense and freshman goalkeeper Sara Carpenter made three saves in net for the Eagles. With the win, BC improves to 5-4 on the season, while Sacred Heart falls to 3-6.
Miller put BC in front early, taking a pass from freshman Courtney Legath before firing a shot past Pioneer goalkeeper Maggie Brauer less than two minutes in. The Eagles would not stop their and proceeded to dominate the ball possession in the first half. Freshman Jackie Yovankin put the home team up by two at 24:13 on a pass from Miller. Yovankin's fifth goal of the season was followed by seven more tallies - two a piece by Miller, sophomore Meggie O'Neill, and freshman Susan Breaznell, and one from senior Rachael Tella- en route to a 9-0 lead with 7:52 remaining in the half. The Pioneers finally broke the shutout streak at the 6:38 mark when Michelle Bruckner scored the first of her two goals on the evening. Both teams would trade goals before the end of the half, giving the Eagles a 10-2 advantage at the break.
BC poured on the offense in the second frame, with freshmen Carley St. Lucia (two goals) and Caitlin Bracken (three goals) leading the offense to seven straight tallies and a 17-2 lead. Bracken's goals were the first points of her career. Bruckner's second goal of the game at 4:37 inched Sacred Heart closer, but the Eagles' defense shut the door on any further scoring.
In addition to Miller's stellar performance, BC received multiple-point games from five other players. Breaznell continued her strong play with three goals and two assists. O'Neill chipped in with two goals and two assists, Bracken and St. Lucia each notched hat-tricks and Yovankin registered one goal and an assist.
For the game, BC out shot Sacred Heart 36-8. Carpenter picked up her second straight win in her second career start and the Pioneers received five saves from the tandem of Brauer and Amy Lavoie.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, April 6 at Virginia Tech in a BIG EAST contest. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
