CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team lost to Stanford University, 13-10, on Friday evening at Alumni Stadium. The Cardinal received three-goal performances from Julia Calzonetti and Kelsey Twist and goalkeeper Virginia Solomon made eight saves in net. The Eagles were led by senior co-captain Lauren Miller, who tallied two goals and added three assists. With the loss, its third straight, BC drops to 7-7 overall, while Stanford improves to 7-6 on the season.
The Cardinal jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Calzonetti and Twist less than three minutes in. Freshman Courtney Legath put BC on the board, with 26:04 left in the half, taking a feed from Miller and firing a shot past Solomon. The Cardinal scored two of the next three goals to push its advantage to 4-2. The Eagles would not back down, however, and would score the next three goals - by Legath, freshman Susan Breaznell, and Miller - to take their first and only lead of the game, 5-4, with 9:55 remaining in the half. Nina Pontano brought the game to a deadlock again with 7:26 left and that score would hold up at the intermission.
The visitors from California came out in the second half and took the lead for good. Stanford scored the first two goals of the half and had the Eagles back on their heels. Freshman Carley St. Lucia cut the lead in half at 7-6 with an unassisted tally and, after a Abbi Hills goal, scored her second goal of the game with 16:22 remaining. Both teams would trade goals over the next seven minutes and as the clock ran under the 10-minute mark, Stanford clung to a 10-9 advantage.
Claire Calzonetti made the crucial play, earning a free position shot with a little more than seven minutes remaining and capitalizing on the chance for the crucial two-goal advantage at 11-9. BC would come no closer than two goals the rest of the way. Lauren Meyer's first goal of the season with 1:23 remaining was all the Eagles could muster in the closing moments
For the game, Stanford out shot Boston College 24-20. Freshmen Sara Carpenter and Michelle Lawson split time in net for BC, combining for four saves.
The Eagles will return to action on Sunday, April 21 against Rutgers in a BIG EAST contest at Alumni Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
