CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday, April 15 after going 3-0 in league games last weekend to help vault the Eagles into third place in the league standings. She shared the award with Notre Dame's Steffany Stenglein.
The award is Ryan's first league honor of 2002, and the third of her career. She also earned back-to-back rookie of the week nods in 2000.
Ryan pitched two complete-game shutouts and came into her final game in relief to help the Eagles earn a come-from-behind victory. In her first league appearance, she threw a 7.0 inning, two-hit shutout against Seton Hall. She struck out 10 in the 6-0 victory. The following day, she tossed the first game of the Eagles' doubleheader against St. John's. Ryan threw a three-hit complete-game shutout, striking out six for the 2-0 win. In the back half of the doubleheader, she came into the game in relief in the fifth inning to lead BC to a 4-3 come-back win. She stuck out four and allowed one run in the game.
For the week, Ryan threw 20.1 innings, gave up 11 hits, struck out 25 and walked just four batters. She had also pitched in a non-conference match-up against Ryan earlier in the week.
On the season, the right-handed pitcher is 7-10 with a 3.04 earned run average. She has seven complete games with five shutouts and has struck out 108 batters in 103.2 innings.
Boston College is currently 18-19 overall and 7-3 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Eagles will next face Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 17 in a 3 p.m. single game at Shea Field.
