CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College earned a two-game sweep of St. John's in BIG EAST softball action on Sunday at Shea Field. In the first game, Kim Ryan pitched a three-hit complete game shutout in a 2-0 Eagle win, then came in to lead the Eagles to a 4-3 come-back win in the nightcap.
BC used a two-run sixth inning to go on to the 2-0 win in the first game. Cara Blumfield started the effort with a one-out double to left field, then advanced on Lisa Fischer's ground out. Jen Asbury reached on an infield single, allowing Blumfield to come home from second. Erin Mackey then followed with her own double to left field, bringing in Asbury from first.
Ryan went the distance for the Eagles, throwing 7.0 innings and allowing three hits. She struck out six and walked one for her career-high fifth shutout of the season. St. John's Megan Allman pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on four hits. Two runs were earned. She struck out five and walked two batters.
In the nightcap, BC staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Lisa Field scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Field rounded third after a Jacqui Goodchild single and came home when the pick-off attempt went past the bag and down the line.
The Red Storm rallied in the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out against Tekae Malandris. BC managed to force a runner out at home for the second out of the inning, but SJU got two runs on Jessica Shepherd's single through the left side before the inning was over. BC brought in Ryan to relieve Malandris after two outs.
Boston College scored three runs and retook the lead at 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Mackey led off with a single up the middle, then moved to third as Elyse Meredith's chopper to third was misplayed by the fielder. Field placed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt down to bring in Mackey and was safe at first when the throw was late. Goodchild next beat out a bunt to the pitcher and scored Meredith. Michelle Daly singled to keep the rally alive, driving in Field from third.
Kelly Haughton homered to open the top of the seventh inning bringing the score to 4-3, but Ryan struck out the next two batters and forced a foul fly to third to end the game.
Malandris struck out seven in 4.2 innings, but allowed two runs on four hits. Neither run was earned. Ryan came in for the final 2.1 innings and allowed one run on one hit while sitting down four by strikeout. Allman pitched her second complete game of the day, allowing four runs on four hits. Two runs were earned, while she struck out five and walked two.
BC improved to 18-19 overall and 7-3 in conference play. St. John's fell to 17-23-1 overall and 5-7 in league play. The Eagles will next play Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 17 in a 3 p.m. game at Shea Field.
