PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Boston College split a non-conference doubleheader with Brown on Wednesday, losing the first game 4-0 before rebounding with a 10-0 win in the nightcap. The split moved the Eagles to 15-18 on the season, while Brown improved to 6-14.
In the first game, Brown's Cara Howe smacked a three-run home run off Kim Ryan in the third inning to lead the Bears to the win. Brown added their fourth run in the bottom of the fourth when Uchenna Omokaro singled in Melissa Brown.
BC only managed three hits off Bear starter Laura Durlesser - two by Elyse Meredith and the other by Cara Blumfield. Durlesser earned the win with a complete game, four-strikeout performance. Ryan went 4.0 innings, striking out five and allowing all four runs. Brooke Shull relieved her in the fifth and struck out one and allowing no hits.
In the nightcap, BC used a nine-run explosion in the top of the seventh inning to go on to the win. The Eagles posted a one-run lead in the fourth and held the advantage until the last frame when the team opened its arsenal.
Tekae Malandris walked to open the final inning and advanced when Lisa Fischer punched a pinch-hit single to left field. Both runners then advanced a base on a passed ball. Jacqui Goodchild drove in Malandris with a single through the left side. Amy Swiderski then reached on an error, allowing Fischer to come home. Erin Mackey singled through the left side to load the bases for Blumfield who singled in Goodchild.
With no outs and three runs across, the Bears brought in Omokaro to complete the game. After the next batter struck out, Daly continued the onslaught with a single through the right side that scored Swiderski. Brooke Shull next knocked down a bloop hit to the pitcher, but reached when the throw home was late and Mackey crossed in time. Malandris then stretched a double to right field into a triple and brought in Blumfield, Daly and Shull. Goodchild closed the scoring with a single that plated Malandris.
Daly - the starting pitcher - went four innings, allowed five hits and struck out one, before being relieved by Malandris in the fifth. She earned her first save of the season by virtue of entering the game in the fifth with a 1-0 lead. Malandris struck out four in three innings pitched.
Daly helped her own cause and doubled to left center to drive in Meredith to stake the team to a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Daly tried to add to the lead on the next play. Brooke Shull dropped a dribbler down the third base line and beat the throw to first, but Daly was tagged out after coming home from second and trying to beat the throw from first to the plate.
BC will next face Seton Hall on Saturday, April 13 and St. John's on Sunday, April 14 in a pair of BIG EAST doubleheaders. Both doubleheaders begin at noon at Shea Field.
