VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team defeated Villanova University, 13-5, on Saturday afternoon at Villanova, Pa. Senior co-captain Lauren Miller scored four goals and added three assists and freshman Courtney Legath added four goals to lead the Eagles. With the win, Boston College improves to 2-0 on the season, while Villanova falls to 0-1.
Boston College came into the match looking to finish off their trip to Pennsylvania with a victory. The Eagles defeated La Salle University, 16-7, on Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the season.
Sophomore Meggie O'Neill put BC on the board less than five minutes in, taking a pass from Miller and firing a shot past Wildcat goaltender Brandy Grenier. Villanova would tie the game one minute later when Meghan Carolan notched an unassisted goal. The Wildcats would take the lead at the 16:39 mark when Steph Haas beat Eagle goalkeeper Rachel Zeller for the 2-1 lead. Legath knotted the score at the 13:17 mark, taking a feed from Miller and finding the net with a blistering shot. The teams would battle back and forth for the remainder of the first half and goals from Miller (twice) and Legath gave the Eagles a 5-4 advantage at the break.
BC came out firing in the second half and would quickly take control of the match. Four goals in the first five minutes of the final frame pushed the Eagles' advantage to 9-4. Villanova would cut the lead to four goals at 15:29, but the visiting team finished off the match scoring the final four goals.
In addition to Miller and Legath's strong outings, the Eagles received scoring from sophomores O'Neill (one goal), Rachel Bausch (one goal) and Tara Morley (one goal), freshmen Suzie Breaznell (one goal and one assist) and Carley St. Lucia (one assist), and senior co-captain Chrissie DeMichele (one goal). Breaznell's second half goal and assist were the first points of her young career.
Villanova received goals from Haas (one goal), Carolan (one goal), Sarah DePeters (two goals) and Cecily Pierce (one goal).
The Eagles will next take the field at Harvard University on Wednesday, March 13. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
