CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team defeated Duquesne University, 16-9, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. Freshmen Susie Breaznell (two goals, three assists), Courtney Legath (four goals, one assist) and Carley St. Lucia (four goals, one assist) combined to register 15 points and classmate Sara Carpenter made six saves in her first career start. With the win, BC improves to 4-4 overall on the season, while Duquesne falls to 2-5.
The Dukes came into the match trying to earn a split of their Massachusetts road trip after a close loss to UMass (16-13) on Friday evening. Becca West put the visitors on the board first, at the 27:56 mark, taking a pass from Ginger Flocco and firing a shot past Carpenter. Sophomore Meggie O'Neill knotted the score just five minutes later on an unassisted tally, her ninth of the season. After a Duquesne goal made the score 2-1, BC rattled off four straight goals - one each from senior Lauren Miller, Breaznell, St. Lucia, and Legath - to jump out to a comfortable 5-2 lead. Lauren Mincher scored her second goal of the game to bring the Dukes within two, but the Eagles responded with three goals to finish off the half - from Legath, St. Lucia, and senior Rachael Tella.
Duquesne opened the scoring in the second frame when Lauren Dutch scored the first of her three goals on the afternoon. The Eagles would respond by scoring three quick goals - Legath's third and fourth and Miller's second- to take control of the match at 11-4. Another three-goal explosion just two minutes later - Breaznell's second and St. Lucia's third and fourth- would put the match beyond reach. Head coach Shari Krasnoo cleared the bench in the final minutes and the Eagles received goals from sophomore Rachel Bausch and junior Krista Lombardi to finish off the scoring.
For the game, BC out shot Duquesne 27-18. Carpenter picked up her first career win with six saves in 60 minutes of action, while Shelley Rank made five saves in the loss for Duquesne.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, April 2 against Sacred Heart at Alumni Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
