Women's Lacrosse Defeats Fairfield, 12-11

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team defeated Fairfield University, 12-11, on Monday afternoon at University Field. Sophomore Meggie O'Neill scored three goals and added two assists and freshman Susie Breaznell scored three goals to lead the offense. With the win, BC improves to 3-3 on the season, while Fairfield falls to 1-4.
Both teams started off tentatively, neither wanting to concede the game's first goal. The Eagles would draw first blood at the 24:23 mark, when senior co-captain Chrissie DeMichele fired a left-handed shot past Stag goalkeeper Monica Janowitz. The tally was DeMichele's seventh of the season. The other half of the captainship, senior Lauren Miller, put the Eagles ahead by two at 19:40, scoring the first of her two goals on the afternoon to go along with three assists. After a Fairfield goal would cut the lead in half, Miller restored the two-goal advantage, taking a pass from O'Neill and firing a shot past the Stag keeper. From there the Eagles would seize the momentum, scoring five of the next six goals to extend their lead to 8-3 at the break.
The home side would not go down without a fight, however, and took the play to the Eagles early in the second frame. Led by junior Jessica Conahan, who scored four of her game-high five goals in the half, the Stags would tie the game at 10 with 9:22 to play and take their only lead of the game at 11-10 with 7:12 left. O'Neill would make the pivotal plays down the stretch, however, to secure the victory, first pouncing on a groundball at midfield, racing down the center of the field and roofing a shot past Janowitz to knot the score at 11. Then, less than a minute later, she would be the catalyst in giving BC the lead, feeding freshman Jacklyn Yovankin, who turned a fired a shot into the net.
For the game, BC out shot Fairfield 31-12.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, March 27 against Hofstra at Alumni Stadium. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
