Every team needs a gut check at some point. Let's just say that is what this week was for us. With losses to Harvard and Notre Dame, this has not been the most uplifting week for our team. Although we were disappointed with our display and had hoped of continuing our winning streak, there is much to be learned from these two games.
As strange as it may sound, these losses could not have come at a better time. We still have the majority of the season before us, as well as all but one of our Big East games. We have plenty of time to learn from out mistakes and move on. Sometimes a team needs to experience the feeling of losing to understand exactly what it takes to win. We now know that having the fundamentals is not always enough. Against respectable teams, such as Harvard and Notre Dame, you have to play with heart, be relentless, and most importantly never let down. You have to give more than you think you have. And you certainly can't be afraid to make a mistake. We have what it takes to win, we already proved that. We just have to realize that to win it, we have to want it, which means doing everything in our capabilities to get the job done.
I don't think that anyone on the team would argue with me when I say that we did not play our best the past two games. We all know that we could have done more, taken better care of the ball, or hustled a little harder just that once. Although we can't change the outcome of Harvard and Notre Dame, we can use these feelings to motivate us for our future games. I have no doubt that this week we are going to prove just how resilient we are. Wednesday's game against Holy Cross is a brand new start for us. It's an opportunity to get back on track and reach one more of our goals. It's a chance to prove to others, and more importantly ourselves, just how talented we are. Holy Cross lookout!
