NEWARK, Del. - The Boston College baseball team (9-7) dropped its second-consecutive game to the University of Delaware on Sunday afternoon, 5-2, at Bob Hannah Stadium. For the Eagles, it is the second time this season they have dropped two or more games in a row.
Delaware received its second-straight complete game outing from its pitcher. Mike Mihalik threw nine innings for the Fightin' Blue Hens, as he allowed only six hits, one earned run, one walk and struck out 10 Boston College batters. For the Eagles, starting pitcher Matt O'Donnell (1-2) pitched 6.1 innings giving up eight hits, three earned runs, one walk and struck out two Delaware batters.
With the game knotted at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Delaware put three runs on the board. Left fielder Casey Fahy, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, drove in the eventual game-winning run when he singled right fielder Doug Eitelman.
The Eagles were led by left fielder Neal McCarthy, who was the only Boston College batter to register two hits on the day (2-for-4). Boston College's two runs came in the top half of the sixth inning, when right fielder Brian Macchi doubled down the left field line to drive in center fielder Matt Lederhos. The other run came when first baseman Vinny Scavone scored when Delaware catcher John Schneider committed an error.
Lederhos, Macchi, Scavone and catcher Jeff Mackor recorded Boston College's other four hits on the afternoon.
Boston College is back in action at 3 p.m. Tuesday when it travels to Kingston, R.I. to take on the University of Rhode Island. This is the Eagles final road game before their home opener on Saturday, March 23 against BIG EAST rival Rutgers University.
