Softball Closes Out Tournament With Two Wins

ATLANTA - Boston College won its final two games of the Georgia State Round Robin with a 5-4 victory over Drexel and a 10-1 win over Ball State on Sunday. Cara Blumfield had a career day, going a combined 6-for-7 with 4 doubles, one triple, two walk-off home runs and eight runs batted in.
The Eagles opened the day with its win over Drexel. The Dragon opened the game posting a run in the top of the first, but BC responded when Blumfield sacrificed Jacqui Goodchild home. The Eagles then took a 2-0 lead in the fourth and a 3-0 lead in the sixth. Erin Mackey drove in Blumfield in the fourth with a single, then Elyse Meredith flied out to right field to bring home Blumfield in the sixth.
Drexel posted two runs in the top of the seventh to knot the score and send the game to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, The Dragon added another run, but the Eagles scored two of their own in the bottom of the frame.
With tournament rules, Jacqui Goodchild was placed on second base. Jennifer Lombardi sacrificed Goodchild to third with a bunt. Lisa Field then singled home Goodchild to tie the score. Blumfield came through again, this time tripling in Jenny Calabrese - who pinch ran for Field - with a triple for the game-winning run.
Kim Ryan started the game, going 5.1 innings. She allowed six hits for one earned run and six strikeouts. Tekae Malandris relieved her, going 2.0 innings to allow one hit and striking out four. Michelle Daly entered in the eighth and earned the win.
In the second game, BC exploded for 10 runs, its highest output of the season, to defeat Ball State, 10-1. The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. Blumfield homered to open the inning. Mackey singled and advanced to second on Meredith's sacrifice bunt. After Mackey advanced to third on a routine infield out, Jen Asbury brought her home with a two-run home run, her first round-tripper of the season. The Eagles extended the lead to 5-0 in the third when Blumfield drove in Goodchild and Lombardi with a double to left field.
BC added two more runs in the fourth. Lisa Fischer hit her first career home run to open the inning, then Lombardi drove in singled to left field to bring home Sara Kellner.
Ball State posted its lone run in the top of the sixth inning, but BC added its final three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jackie Goodchild opened the inning with a single. After Field drew a walk, Blumfield blasted her second home run of the game to drive in the final three runs of the game.
The prior afternoon, the Eagles fell to No. 16 Iowa, 7-6 in a five-run game. Iowa used seven runs in the third inning to take the win. After the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second, Iowa responded with its big inning. The Eagles come close to tying the game with a five-run fifth, but could get no closer. Mackey and Meredith both hit home runs for BC. Mackey ended the game with three RBI and two runs scored, while Meredith had two RBI.
The Eagles concluded the round robin with a 2-3 record, but lost three one-run games. The team outscored its opponents 26-19 on the weekend. Overall BC improved to 3-7 on the season.
BC will take its annual Spring Break trip out west this season. The Eagles will play three games at Arizona State, two at Arizona and then play in the UNLV Tournament with two games apiece against Oregon and the host Rebels. The trip will last from March 1-March 10.
