CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team (3-0) travels to Berkeley, Calif. this weekend to take on Pac-10 power California. Game one is Friday at 5 p.m., which is followed by game two on Saturday and game three Sunday, both of which are at 4 p.m. All three game times are Eastern Standard Time.
The only other meeting between Boston College and California was back in March of 1920 in Chestnut Hill, where the Golden Bear's defeated the Eagles, 13-9.
Boston College head coach Pete Hughes is off to his best start since taking over the reigns back in 1999. The Eagles are coming off wins over Delaware State University (7-3) and Davidson College (16-10 and 17-13) last weekend in Davidson, N.C.
The Golden Bear's of California enter with a record of 5-6, but lost to No. 21 Long Beach State University two out of three times last weekend. California is led by infielder Conor Jackson and preseason All-American pitcher Trevor Hutchinson. Jackson has started and played in all 11 games for the Golden Bear's. He leads the team with a .422 batting average, slugging percentage (.778) home runs (3), RBI (13), triples (2) and tied in doubles (3). Hutchinson is off to a solid start for California, as he is 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA. He has struck out 27 batters in only 23.0 innings of work.
For the Eagles, senior right fielder Brian Macchi is coming off an incredible weekend. Prior to being named BIG EAST Player of the Week, he registered eight hits, six of which were doubles, seven RBI and four runs. Also, senior pitcher Mark Sullivan kicked off the season by throwing seven innings, giving up only six hits and two runs while striking out nine Delaware State batters. Freshman shortstop Ryan Morgan is another Boston College player off to a quick start. He has started and played in all three games for Hughes' squad, and in those three games he registered seven hits (three doubles), six runs and four RBI.
The three-game series for the Eagles is the final preparation before an 11-day Spring Break trip, which takes Boston College to Fort Myers, Homestead and Bradenton, Fla.
