COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Boston College dropped its opening two games of the 2002 season, facing Utah and Texas A&M on the first day of the Aggie Classic.
In the first game, the Eagles held a 2-1 lead with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Utes rallied for five runs to take the 6-2 victory in BC's first game of the 2002 campaign. Cara Blumfield drove in both Eagles runs. The Eagles were held to three hits in the game.
Blumfield had an RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning, bringing home Jacqui Goodchild who had reached on an error. Blumfield then doubled in Goodchild in the sixth inning. Utah had tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Utah sent the order up in the final frame, scoring five runs off of Tekae Malandris. The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the inning when Malandris reached base on a single to left field, but the rally was cut short when a runner was thrown out attempting to steal second.
In the second game, the Eagles fell to the host Aggies, 8-0, in five innings. Texas A&M posted four runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added four more in the bottom of the fifth.
For the Eagles, who were held to just six hits, Erin Mackey went 2-for-3.
BC faces Arkansas and Texas A&M on Saturday, before wrapping up the tournament with Utah on Sunday.
