AMHERST, Mass. - For the second game in a row between the two schools, Boston College and Massachusetts skated to a regulation draw and needed an overtime session to decide the game. For the second game in a row, Boston College pulled out the overtime HOCKEY EAST victory. Ryan Shannon deflected in a Dave Spina shot past UMass netminder Mike Johnson at 1:12 of the extra stanza for the win at the Mullins Center on Friday before 3,132 fans.
Spina put the Eagles on the board at 12:22 of the first period. He picked up a puck in the neutral and skated in down the left wing. His wrist shot beat Johnson high on his glove-side for an 1-0 lead. Ned Havern assisted on the goal. Spina's goal marked the eighth time this season he scored the team's first goal of the game.
Massachusetts (8-18-1, 3-13-1 HEA) responded with two goals in the second period. Josh Hanson found the puck in a pile in front of the Eagles' net and scored at 1:12 to knot the game at 1-1.
Greg Mauldin gave the Minutemen a 2-1 lead at 10:28. After breaking up a clearing attempt, he walked in alone from the blue line and fired a shot from between the face-off circle that went in just under the crossbar. Tim Vitek assisted on the goal.
Boston College (13-12-2, 6-10-1 HEA) had several prime scoring chances during two separate 4x4 opportunities as the second period wound down, but was unable to stick one in behind Johnson.
Ty Hennes pulled the Eagles even at 2-2 with just 3:51 to play in regulation. After Ales Dolinar picked up a pass from Andrew Alberts in his own zone, he skated through center ice into the UMass defensive zone. With a defender on his back, he passed the puck off to Hennes who was streaking down the wing to collect his second goal of the season.
Boston College outshot Massachusetts 35-27 for the game. Johnson made 32 saves in the loss, while Matti Kaltiainen made 25 saves for his sixth win of the season.
The tandem of Shannon and Spina was also involved in BC's 4-3, overtime victory at the Mullins Center on Jan. 7. Both players recorded assists on Jeff Giuliano's game-winner. The Spina-to-Shannon connection mirrored the play that Giuliano scored on earlier in the month.
The Eagles will next face Boston University in the 50th annual Beanpot. The teams will face off in the second game of the first round, scheduled for 8 p.m. at the FleetCenter on Monday, Feb. 4. The game will be carried live by WTKK 96.9 FM and can also be seen on NESN.
