
Hockey Falls In Round One Of Beanpot Tournament, 5-3

BOSTON (AP) - Boston University and Northeastern advanced to the finals of the 50th Beanpot Tournament with first-round wins Monday night.
Mike Ryan scored three goals for his third career hat trick, and Keni Gibson made 22 saves Monday night as Northeastern beat Harvard 5-2.
In the late game at FleetCenter, John Sabo scored two goals to lead Boston University over Boston College 5-3.
Northeastern (14-10-3) and BU (17-7-2) will meet next Monday for the championship. Harvard (9-9-3) will play Boston College (13-13-2) in the consolation game.
With the score tied 2-2, BU freshman Ryan Whitney drove toward the net, and Eagles defenseman Brett Peterson accidentally knocked the puck past goalie Matti Kaltiainen at 6:05 of the third.
J.D. Forrest scored with 4:38 remaining in the third for BC to cut the lead to 4-3.
But Mike Pandolfo added an empty-net goal for the Terriers (17-7-2), who reached the Beanpot final for the 18th time in 19 years.
After Jack Baker tied it 1-1 for BU at 1:04 of the second, the teams traded short-handed goals.
Andrew Alberts scored his first career goal when he converted a pass from Forrest and beat Terriers goalie Sean Fields at 6:46. John Sabo responded for BU at 15:05 when he rebounded Pandolfo's shot and flipped the puck past Kaltiainen to tie it 2-2.
Tony Voce scored his team-leading 21st goal for Boston College.
Ryan scored a goal in the first period and? two more in the third for Northeastern.
The Huskies are bidding for their fifth Beanpot title and first since 1988.
Brendan Bernakevitch and Kenny Turano had goals for Harvard (9-9-3).
Ryan Dudgeon and Eric Ortlip scored in the second period to g?ive Northeastern a 3-1 lead.
Jared Mudryk's shot from the left circle was deflected by Dudgeon past Harvard goalie Dov Grumet-Morris at 9:?19 to snap a 1-all tie. Ortlip followed with a power-play goal at 15:44.
Ryan added his second of the night at 8:36 of the third. He completed the hat trick with a goal at 12:01.
The tournament, started in 1952, pits Boston's four major college hockey programs against each other. Boston College won last season, but Boston University has the most titles with 23.
