Softball Plays In UConn Fall Tournament

VERNON, Conn. - The Boston College softball team unofficially opened its 2002 season at the UConn Tournament this weekend. The Eagles went 1-3 over the two-day event, winning against Central Connecticut State and falling to Fairfield, Long Island and Providence.
In the first game on Saturday, Sept. 22, the Eagles dropped a 2-0 decision to Fairfield. The team mustered only three hits on the day. Sophomore Tekae Malandris started on the mound for BC, tossing five innings with two strikeouts and both earned runs. Freshman Michelle Daly made her first appearance in an Eagle uniform, pitching the final two innings of the game.
In the day's second game, Daly took the mound as the starter, while Malandris went 2-for-2 with two RBI in the 3-2 loss to Long Island. Sophomore Erin Mackey went 2-for-3 and scored both runs, while Junior Cara Blumfield also went 2-for-3 in the game.
On Sunday, BC defeated CCSU, 5-0, as sophomore Erin Mackey started in the mound. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Daly went 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI, while Malandris was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
In the final game of the tournament, BC fell to Providence, 3-1. Junior Kim Ryan started, throwing four innings with three strikeouts and two earned runs. Malandris pitched in relief, throwing three strikeouts in the shortened assignment. Blumfield went 2-for-3 with a run batted in, while Daly went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore Jacqui Goodchild was 2-for-2 on the day.
For the tournament, the Eagles out-hit the opposition, .235 (24-for-102) to .156 (15-for-96). One of BC's new catchers, freshman Lisa Field, also adjusted to the college game, throwing out every attempted base stealer. Every Eagle pitcher saw action this weekend, except senior Brooke Shull who is a member of the volleyball team in the fall.
Boston College will play softball's version of the Beanpot Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30. On Saturday, BC will face Harvard at 10 a.m. and Providence at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Eagles will play Boston University at 10 a.m. All of BC's games will be played at Boston University.
