CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston College softball team swept Harvard, 9-1 (5 inn.) and 8-0 this afternoon at Soldiers Field. The Eagles' Cara Blumfield went a collective 4-for-5 on the day and hit her 13th home run of the season.
In the first game, BC jumped on the Crimson starter for four runs in the top half of the first inning. Jacqui Goodchild singled over the shortstop's head to lead off the game, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Blumfield walked, the Eagles executed a double steal for runners on second and third with one out. With two outs, Lisa Fischer hit the first of her three doubles in the game to plate both runners. She scored when a routine out at first on an Alison Erbig bunt attempt turned into a four-base error and both came home.
In the second, the Eagles added four more runs. Goodchild again led off the inning with a single and Summer Jarratt singled through the left side, setting up Blumfield who smacked a three-run homer to left center field. With no outs and a 7-0 lead in the second, Jen Asbury singled up the middle and advanced on a wild pitch. Fischer hit another double to plate Asbury.
Harvard recorded its only run in the bottom of the third, but the Eagles responded with another run in the top of the fourth for the eight-run margin and the abbreviated game. Blumfield singled to center field and Fischer knocked her in with her third two-base hit. In all, Fischer had four RBI in the game.
Kimberly Ryan started the game and pitched the first four innings before Erin Mackey relieved her in the fifth. Ryan allowed three hits and one run, striking out two and walking none. Mackey allowed two hits in her stint.
In the nightcap, the Eagles again jumped on the Crimson pitchers, recording two runs in the first and at least one run in every inning except the third. In the first, Goodchild again reached on a infield single. The Harvard pitcher issued three straight walks and Blumfield and Asbury both came home to plate a 2-0 score.
In the second, a Goodchild hit to right field brought home pitcher Brooke Shull who had walked to open the inning. Two frames later, Leah Kamataris walked to open the inning and, after two sacrafices, came home on a Blumfield double to left center. In the fifth, Erbig reached third on another error on a routine out at first and rounded the corner on a wild pitch for the 5-0 lead.
In the sixth, Blumfield, who opened the inning by drawing another walk, came home after singles by Jennifer Lombardi and Erbig. In the final stanza, Jennifer Perrotta scored on a Jarratt double to left center. Summer later scored on a Blumfield single to center.
Shull started and pitched the first four innings, striking out four and allowing four hits with no runs and no walks. Tekae Malandris entered in the fifth and earned eight of her nine of her outs by strikeouts, with nine K's overall. She allowed just two hits in 3.0 innings.
On the day, the Eagles pitchers did not allow a walk and struck out 15.
With the sweep, the Eagles improved to 29-24 overall. BC will play its final games of the season on Sunday, May 6 in a doubleheader against Princeton beginning at noon on Shea Field. Jarratt and Perrotta will be honored during Senior Day prior to the start of the game.
