CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team closed its 2001 season with a pair of wins over Princeton, 2-1 and 6-0, on Sunday at Shea Field. In the first game, Alison Erbig's bunt single drove in Cara Blumfield in the bottom of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie for the win. In the second, Blumfield went 2-for-2 and drove in three to help lead the Eagles to the 6-0 victory.
In the first game, BC posted a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as Jacqui Goodchild reached first on a bunt and came home on a Summer Jarratt double to right field. Princeton tied the game in the top of the next inning as pitcher Brie Galicinao homered over the left center field wall.
Galicinao and Eagles starter Kim Ryan competed in a pitching duel over the next six half innings, but the Eagles were able to jump on Galicinao for the win in the seventh. Blumfield reached base to open the inning after getting hit on the elbow by a pitch. After she stole second, she came home on Erbig's bunt when the throw to first was bobbled by the first baseman.
Ryan pitched the complete game, striking out six and walking none with three hits. Galicinao also pitched a complete game, striking out nine with one earned run on four hits.
In the second game, BC got started early with two runs in the first. Jarratt singled through the left side with one out and then advanced to second as Blumfield drew a walk. Jen Asbury singled through the left side to load the bases and Lisa Fischer brought home Jarratt when her hit took an awkward bounce in front of the shortstop. Erbig next reached on a fielder's choice, but Blumfield was out at home. Jenn Perrotta singled up the middle and plated Asbury for the 2-0 score after one.
Blumfield added three runs in the fifth as she belted out her school-record 14th home run of the season with her opposite-field blast to right center. She drove in Tekae Malandris and Goodchild who had both singled to start the inning.
The Eagles posted one more run in the sixth when Sara Kellner's sacrifice fly brought home Elyse Meredith. Meredith had opened the inning with a single up the middle, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Brooke Shull started the game for the Eagles and allowed two hits, two strikeouts and no walks in three innings. Malandris entered in the fourth and struck out eight in four innings with no hits, no runs and no walks.
BC finished the season on a six-game winnings streak - its longest of the season - and with a 31-24 overall record. Princeton moved to 20-19 overall.
