CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College scored the last five runs of the game en route to a 10-5 victory over the University of Massachusetts - Amherst (17-16-0) in the 12th Annual Beanpot Championship game Wednesday, May 2 at Fenway Park. BC earned its fifth Beanpot title and second in three years (1999). The win also extended the Eagles' victory string to six (25-20-0).
With the score tied at five, Ryan Leahy led off the seventh with a walk. Matt Lederhos was then hit by a pitch before Tom Ellerbrook's passed ball placed the runners at second and third. Two batters later, Brian Macchi was intentionally walked by David Loonie to load the bases before Brian Durkin was hit by a pitch, knocking home the game-winning run. After Mendoza struck out, Jeff Mackor crushed a bases-clearing double off reliever Kevin Inglis that provided BC with some breathing room at 9-5. Mackor came home on Chris Rosado's single through the right side for the final 10-5 score.
The Minutemen were on top early. UMass capitalized on an error and wild pitch to put up a run in the first. In BC's first at bat, Brian Macchi smacked a tape-measure, two-run home run - 15th on the year - off the Coke bottles in left field to give BC a 2-1 edge. Three innings later, Chris Rosado hit a two-out, two-run double, which extended the Eagles' lead to three. The Minutemen mustered their first of two comebacks on the day, scoring a total of three runs in the fifth and sixth. Ellerbrook pushed across one run on a groundout, and Connell Clark drove in two runs on his single to left field for the 4-4 tie.
The two teams traded runs in the their next opportunities, including a home run to the right center bullpen by BC's Brian Durkin.
The Eagles used five pitchers before the winning pitcher, Mark Sullivan, who allowed only three hits in 3.0 innings with one earned run, entered the game in the seventh. Offensively, BC's no. eight hitter, Chris Rosado, topped the team with three hits and three RBIs. Mackor also drove in three runs. Brian Macchi contributed a pair of hits and two RBIs.
David Loonie suffered the loss for UMass.
BC welcomes Seton Hall to Chestnut Hill May 5-6 for a three-game series. Game time is 4 p.m. on Saturday.
