CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College snapped its nine-game win streak with a pair of losses (8-2, 8-4) to second-ranked Notre Dame Saturday in Chestnut Hill. BC fell to 28-22-0 overall and 10-13-0 in the BIG EAST. The Fighting Irish improved to 45-8-1 and 22-3.
Notre Dame came out fighting in game one. With the bases loaded, Ken Meyer launched a home run to left field, providing ND with the 4-0 lead. The visitors then used a sacrifice fly by Meyer and run-scoring single from Paul O'Toole in the third inning to put two more runs up on the board. The Eagles got those runs back in the fifth when BC loaded the bases on two walks and a single for Matt Lederhos' RBI single to left field. Joe Kealty then stroked a ball to the same spot for another run. Notre Dame clinched the win on Alec Porzel's two-run home run in the ninth.
Aaron Heilman notched his 13th victory, allowing seven hits in 7.0 innings with five strikeouts. Chris Gannon suffered only his third loss of the season (5-3), giving up five hits for eight runs while fanning six batters.
For the second time, ND took the 4-0 edge before BC halved the difference in the seventh inning. Jeff Mackor singled to right, moved to third on Rosado's double and scored thanks to Danny Tamayo's wild pitch. Hubbard's groundout to the shortstop plated one more BC run. The Eagles crept closer (5-4) in their next at bat with Brian Macchi's 16th home run of the season, a two-run blast in the eighth inning. Ben Cooke had a sacrifice fly in ND's last at bat and Matt Strickroth propelled a two-run home run off Mark Sullivan to account for the 8-4 tally.
Matt Laird preserved teammate Danny Tamayo's strong start by pitching a hitless ninth inning. Jed Rogers was saddled with the loss after allowing only three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings.
The two teams meet Sunday, May 13 at noon.
