Softball Falls At UMass, 5-4

AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Boston College softball team fell, 5-4, to the University of Massachusetts on Thursday. The Eagles held a 4-3 lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Minutewomen posted two runs to take the win.
UMass got on the board first in the second inning when Cherra Wheeler homered in the team's first at-bat in the frame.
BC regrouped and plated four runs in the third. Summer Jarratt singled to bring home Leah Kamataris. Cara Blumfield stepped up and tripled, driving in Jarratt and Jacqui Goodchild. Blumfield scored on a ground out by Jen Asbury.
The Minutewomen drew within one run in the bottom half of the inning, bring the score to 4-3 in favor of BC.
After Anna Perry singled and took a base on a passed ball, Brandi Cross had the third of her three RBI, doubling home Perry. The Eagles threw out a potential run at home plate, but UMass posted one more run for the win.
Jarratt and Blumfield both went 2-for-3, while Goodchild finished with a 2-for-4 day. Brooke Shull pitched two and a third innings, taking the loss on the mound. Tekae Malandris came in relief, finishing the last 3.2 innings, striking out five batters.
The Eagles fell to 16-15 overall. The team will play a pair of BIG EAST doubleheaders this weekend, facing St. John's in Jamaica, N.Y. on Saturday and Seton Hall on Sunday.
