CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Junior third baseman Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) hit three home runs for five RBIs, and Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) plated the game-winning tally on his three-run bomb to lift Boston College 12-10 over Maine Wednesday, April 25 in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles moved to 20-20 while serving the Black Bears only their 11th loss in 36 contests.
In the eighth inning, Macchi cracked his third home run of the day, a two-run shot, to inch BC within one at 10-9. Following two walks, Mendoza slammed his first dinger of the season and 14th of his career, this time off Maine pitcher Adam Labelle to secure the 12-10 lead. The Eagles drove in six runs on five hits in that stanza. Their first run came after Mike Hubbard doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning then scored on Lederhos' single and miscue by the Maine left fielder.
The lead changed five times in the game that saw both teams total 15 hits. Boston College booted four plays compared to Maine's two.
BC drew first blood on Macchi's solo home run in the second inning. Maine scored once in both the second and third for the 2-1 lead. That advantage was short-lived as Macchi launched his second round-tripper in as many plate appearances during the fourth. Three hits, a walk and passed ball provided BC with a three-run fifth inning for the 6-3 advantage. Though, the Bears came back strong, pushing across seven runs on six hits in the sixth off BC starter Matthew Duffey. Matt Reynolds and Mark Reichley each led the offensive barrage, contributing two-run hits for Maine.
James Dawson, who entered in the sixth to stop the bleeding, registered the win (3-1). The freshman allowed only one run on four hits in 2.1 innings. Mark Sullivan earned his second save of the season, protecting the two-run edge with a hitless ninth inning.
Brian Durkin had four hits in five trips to the plate. Both Matt Lederhos and Joe Kealty each added a pair of hits.
BC welcomes Villanova April 28-29. Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 12 noon.
