WORCESTER, Mass. - In a day of career performances, the Boston College softball team swept the Holy Cross Crusaders, 3-2 and 8-0 (6 inn.), on Tuesday at Freshman Field. In the first game, sophomore Cara Blumfield hit her 12th home run of the season for the BC single-season school record, surpassing the previous mark of 11 held by Chris Vicari '00. Classmate Kim Ryan pitched a complete-game with a season-high 12 strikeouts. In the second game, junior pitcher Brooke Shull pitched a one-hitter and launched her first career home run to drive in three of her five RBI in the game.
In the first game, BC jumped on the board in the first inning as Blumfield hit a hard shot to third base that ricocheted into the outfield to drive in Summer Jarratt who had doubled. Holy Cross evened the score in the fifth as Crusader came in on an unearned run. In the top of the sixth, BC added another run. After Erin Mackey drew a walk, Sara Kellner ran for her and then stole second. Jen Perrotta stepped in to pinch hit for Ryan and saw a wild pitch that sent Kellner to third. The Holy Cross catcher retrieved the ball and sent in back to the pitcher who neglected to call timeout. An aware Kellner stole home for the Eagles' second run.
Blumfield's record home run in the top of the seventh proved to be the game-winning run as Holy Cross plated a runner in the bottom of the inning. Blumfield went 3-for-3 on the day, driving in two runs.
In the nightcap, the two teams had to battle through two delays caused by passing thunder showers. After play resumed, Shull carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
BC posted two runs in the top of the fourth. Perrotta knocked out her second home run of the season over the left center field fence. Jarratt singled in Jacqui Goodchild three batters later for a 2-0 lead. Shull gave up her lone hit in the next frame on a lead-off triple, but escaped the inning unscathed as the runner was picked off third by a strong throw to Lisa Fischer by Perrotta, who was seeing her first catching action since March 10.
The Eagles posted four runs in the fifth inning. Jen Asbury led off with one of her three hits in the game. Mackey reached on a single up the middle and both came home on Shull's three-run shot. Perrotta followed with a double and came home on a Goodchild bunt single. BC added two more runs in the sixth as Shull doubled in Asbury and Ficher with her third hit of the game.
Asbury went 3-for-3 in the game, while Goodchild, Shull and Perrotta went 3-for-4. Eight of BC's nine batters registered at least one hit in the second game.
Shull pitched the full six innings, striking out seven and allowing only one hit. She improved to 8-3 overall on the season.
With the sweep, BC improved to 25-21 overall. The win in the second game was also head coach Jen Finley's 250th career win.
The Eagles will next face No. 11 Notre Dame in a road doubleheader in South Bend, Ind. on Saturday, April 28.
