SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Boston College dropped two games to No. 9 Notre Dame, 4-2 and 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Ivy Field in a BIG EAST doubleheader. In the first game, BC was held to just two hits by Irish pitcher Jen Sharron, but still brought home two runs. In the second game, Alison Erbig got the Eagles' only hit of the game off Kristin Schmidt, who pitched a one-hitter against BC.
In the first game, Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but BC cut the deficit in half in the next frame. After Summer Jarratt singled to open the fourth inning, Cara Blumfield drew a walk. The Irish battery allowed consecutive passed balls, which allowed Jarratt to come home for a run.
Notre Dame added another run in the fifth, but BC again climbed within one run in the top of the sixth. Jarratt again reached base to lead off the inning, this time on a walk. Jacqui Goodchild beat out an infield hit and the Blumfield reached on a throwing error by the Irish's third baseman. Jarratt came home on the play. Notre Dame added another run in the bottom of the inning for insurance and the 4-2 win.
Tekae Malandris pitched a complete game for the Eagles. Sharron also pitched a complete game for the Irish, striking out 14 in seven innings.
The game marked the first time in seven games an Irish opponent had scored two runs and it was only the second time an opponent scored two or more runs in 16 games.
In the nightcap, Notre Dame posted a run in the bottom of the first and then plated four runners in the fourth. Schmidt carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning when Erbig singled to lead off the frame.
Kim Ryan pitched a complete game for the Eagles, striking out five in defeat. Schmidt sat down nine in seven innings.
BC fell to 25-23 overall and 6-12 in BIG EAST games. Notre Dame improved to 45-3 overall and 14-0 in conference play.
The Eagles will next face Pittsburgh on Sunday, April 29, in a noon doubleheader to close their conference schedule for 2001.
