CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team swept a BIG EAST doubleheader from Providence, 1-0 and 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Shea Field. BC freshman Tekae Malandris earned the wins in both games and drove in the tying run in the second game.
In the first game, the Eagles and Friars played through three scoreless innings before BC posted the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth. Jen Asbury kicked off the inning by drawing a walk. After both Lisa Fischer and Amy Swiderski grounded out, Asbury landed on third where she came home on an Erin Mackey double to center.
Providence threatened in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally. Cari Van Dusen reached first on an error and then Amber Carr walked, but Lynette Rose ended the threat, striking out to end the inning.
Malandris retired the side in the top of the seventh for the win. She pitched a complete game, two-hitter. She struck out five and walked three for her sixth win of the season.
In the nightcap, Providence staked a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth after Carr doubled in Marisa Hernandez. BC tied up the score in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Jen Perrotta walked. Alison Erbig hit a fielder's choice, but both Perrotta and Erbig reached first and second safely. Perrotta was out at third on Jacqui Goodchild's fielder's choice, but Erbig moved into scoring position. Malandris stepped up and hit an RBI single to center field to bring in Erbig and tie the game, 1-1.
BC added two more runs in the sixth. Summer Jarratt drew a walk to open the inning and was moved over to second on a Cara Blumfield sacrifice bunt. Asbury walked to put runners at first and second. Fischer drove in Jarratt with a single to right field and Mackey singled in Asbury for the 3-1 lead. Malandris struck out two Friars in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
Kim Ryan started the game and stuck out the first five batters she faced. She pitched five innings, recording nine total strikeouts, while walking three. Malandris pitched the final two innings for the Eagles.
With the sweep, BC improved to 22-17 overall and 5-7 in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence evened its record at 17-17 and fell to 2-8 in league play.
The Eagles will next face cross-town rival Boston University on Thursday, April 19, in a doubleheader slated to start at 3 p.m. at Shea Field.
