CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College scored nine runs on nine hits and capitalized on six Rhode Island errors to beat the visiting Rams 9-1 Wednesday, April 11 at Shea Field. The win placed BC one game over .500 (16-15).
James Dawson (Portland, Maine) tossed a five-hitter through 7.0 innings. Rhode Island's only run came at the top of the first after Steve Lemieux doubled down the left field line off Dawson's third offering, then advanced when the pitcher's throw to third was not in time on a fielder's choice bunt, and scored on a wild pitch. The freshman right-hander recovered, surrendering only five hits through the next 6.0 innings on the way to his second victory of the season, distinguished with a career-high four strikeouts.
Eight different Eagle batters notched a hit while Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.) contributed a pair in five trips to the plate.
Two consecutive Ram fielding errors in the first inning placed Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) and Chris Rosado (Stamford, Conn.) on first and second, respectively. Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Mike Perrotta's free pass to Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) brought the tying run home. Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) sent a run-scoring single to left then Jeff Mackor (Salem, NH) added his first sacrifice fly of the season to grant BC a 3-1 lead.
BC scored in four of the next five innings. Mike Hubbard plated two runs on his single to left in BC's next opportunity. Macchi put up a BC run with his sacrifice fly as did Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.), who launched a bullet of the wall in right center for a double, his third on the season, to score one run.
Jarad Trout, who entered the game in relief of Perrotta in the sixth inning, stopped the bleeding. He shut down BC for the remaining 2.1 innings, retiring two batters on strikeouts. Perrotta suffered the loss with little defensive support, allowing nine runs - three earned - on seven hits.
BC hosts Pittsburgh Thursday, April 12. Game time is noon.
