CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College took both ends of a doubleheader (7-3, 4-3) against the University at Albany on opening day at Shea Field Tuesday, April 10. The wins evened the Eagles' record at 15-15-0.
In the second inning of game one, Brian Durkin led off with a solo home run, his fifth on the year, to give BC the 1-0 lead. The next batter, Jarett Mendoza, walked and came home on Jeff Mackor's first home run of the season that gave the Eagles some breathing room at 3-0.
In their next opportunity, the Eagles capitalized on three walks by Albany starter Shawn Walsh and two defensive errors to double their lead. Mackor struck again, plating two runs on his single, to punctuate a four-RBI day.
The hosts tacked on one in the fourth thanks to Brian Macchi's run-scoring double.
However, the Danes did not go quietly, totaling five of their seven hits in their final at bat. With a man on first and third, Duffey struck out Eddie Scott to end the Albany threat and register his first collegiate win on the mound.
Ryan Leahy's sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning proved to be the game-winning RBI in the second contest of the day. Down 4-1 entering the seventh, the Danes staged their second comeback of the day, ignited by two RBIs by Mike Grasso, who doubled to right field and advanced to third on the throw. Grasso actually drove in all of Albany's runs in that game. Mike Hubbard got Grasso out at home, though, in a 6-2 fielder's choice play then Elfeldt got Michael Tecklenburg to hit into a 5-4 fielder's choice to end the game.
In the second consecutive game, an Eagle led off the second inning with a solo home run, this time Brian Macchi launched his eighth on the season. The Eagles scored the final three runs in the fourth inning. Mendoza grounded out to score Macchi then Durkin came home on a wild pitch to set the stage for Matt Lederhos' first collegiate triple. Leahy drove in Lederhos on the sacrifice bunt.
Erik Olson registered the win for Boston College.
BC hosts Rhode Island Wednesday April 11. Game time is 3 p.m.
