CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College suffered a 3-1 loss in game one then rebounded to win the second game, 8-6, over host and BIG EAST foe Georgetown Sunday March 25 in Bethesda, Md. The Eagles now have a 10-11-0 overall record and 1-6 mark in the loop.
The Hoyas' Eric Santana cracked a two-run home run to left field to break a 1-1 tie and lead Georgetown to the 3-1 victory in game one. BC received a strong outing from last-minute replacement, Mark Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.), who allowed three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. His Hoya counterpart, Randy Erwin, limited BC to only three hits in 7.0 innings.
In the eighth inning of game two, freshman Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.) fought off a two-out, full count with seven foul balls before launching a bases-loaded, three-run double to the opposite field to give BC a 7-3 advantage. That was DiScipio's second start of the day and second in his young BC career. The Hoyas responded with three runs off Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) in the bottom half of that inning but could muster no more. Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) added an insurance run, a solo homer, in the top of the ninth.
BC's Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.) registered his second win of the season, allowing five hits in 7.0 innings with five K's. Tony Pina, who had not surrendered an earned run in 19.0 innings of relief, gave up two to BC for the loss.
Both Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) and Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) contributed two hits for BC.
BC plays Holy Cross Thursday, March 29 in Worcester, Mass. Game time is 3 p.m.
