CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Senior pitcher Erik Olson (Reading, Mass.) threw a career-high eight strikeouts, allowing only one hit to pace Boston College to the 12-2 victory over host Holy Cross Thursday, March 29 in Worcester. The win improved the Eagles' record to 11-11-0 overall.
Through 6.0 innings, Olson faced just one more batter than the minimum, walking none and helping BC to retire the side in five of six innings. The senior right-hander bettered his previous career-high of six strikeouts set twice during the 2000 season. The Crusaders' only hit was a double by Matt McEvoy that hit the glove of an outstretched Chris Rosado (Stamford, Conn.) in the bottom of the second. Matthew Duffey (San Antonio, Texas) extended the shutout through 2.0 innings of hitless relief. Freshman Mike Gauthier (Salem, Mass.) surrendered two runs in the last of the ninth off the bat of Chris Doneski, who hit a double to right center.
BC sent 12 batters to the plate in the decisive seventh inning, collecting five of its 15 total hits and two walks for seven runs. After Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.) and Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) both walked to get on base, Rosado was the first of four consecutive Eagles to produce a run-scoring hit. The eighth hitter of that inning, Eric Wright (Southboro, Mass.), drove in two runs on his double to right center followed by Mike Hubbard's (Braintree, Mass.) sacrifice fly.
The Eagles added two runs in the second inning with both runners coming home on balks by the Holy Cross starting pitcher Mike Montano. Joe Kealty's first home run of the season, a two-run shot, lifted the Eagles to a 4-0 advantage after four innings.
All nine starters notched a hit while Wright, Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) and Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) each had two hits for the Eagles. Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) went 3-for-3.
BC will play at Northeastern April 3. Game time 3 p.m.
