BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Boston College softball team dropped its BIG EAST conference opening series, falling 2-1 and 8-0, to Virginia Tech on Sunday.
In the first game, BC out-hit the Hokies 4 to 3, but were unable to solve pitcher Ashlee Dobbe who struck out six in her 7.0 innings of work. Virginia Tech posted two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles rallied with one run in the top of the fourth as Cara Blumfield brought home Alison Erbig, but Dobbe proved too strong the rest of the way. Freshman Tekae Malandris pitched six innings for BC, striking out six, while allowing only three hits and two runs (none earned).
In the nightcap, the Hokies again got on the board early. Taking a 1-0 lead after one inning, Virginia Tech added five more runs in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth before the game was called. The Hokie's Catherine Gilliam pitched all five innings, allowing only four hits and no runs. Kimberly Ryan started and faced 17 batters before Brooke Shull entered in the third in relief for the Eagles.
BC stands at 13-11 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST. Virginia Tech improved to 20-12 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Eagles will next face Fairfield in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 27. Originally scheduled to take place in Chestnut Hill, the game has been moved to Fairfield due to field conditions at the Heights. Game time for game one is 2:30 p.m.
