Women's Rowing Opens Season At The Jesuit Invitational

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Boston College women's rowing team opened up their spring season today, participating at the Jesuit College Invitational, on the Cooper River, in Camden, N.J. The event was hosted by St. Joseph's.
Facing choppy waters and rough weather in their first competition as a varsity program, Boston College put forth a strong performance on the 2,000-meter course. In the varsity eight race, Boston College won, defeating St. Joseph's, Holy Cross, Fairfield and Loyola College by over 14 seconds with a time of 6:54.39. The crew was stroked by Mary Cooley. In the seventh seat was Ellie Gregory, followed by Alex Kazanovicz, Kristin Henny, Julie Todhunter, Andrea Achimovic, Amelia Stehpens, Caitlin Boron in the bow seat and Natalie Alderete as coxswain.
The second varsity eight rowed a 7:19.41, six seconds faster than the next crew, winning their event. In second was St. Joseph's followed by Fairfield and Holy Cross. In the stroke seat of the second varsity crew was Lucia Romeo followed by Claire Dennison, Katie Miller, Martha Tierney, Terri Cojohn, Tianna Morrison, Kelly Griffin and Kim Dugan in the bow seat. Vicky Haley was the coxswain.
In the four event, the Eagles took second place with a time of 8:16.09 behind Fordham who rowed an 8:07.09. Rowing in the stroke seat was Lauren Lehane followed by Kate McDonough in the third seat, Kimberly Donohue in the second seat and Ellen Gallagher in the bow seat. Bridgette Stewart was the coxswain.
The novice team followed in the varsity successes, winning both their races. The first novice eight crew defeated Fairfield, St. Joseph's, Loyola and Fordham, rowing a 7:33.01. The second novice eight defeated their only opponent, Fairfield by 47 second, rowing an 8:10.56.
The Boston College women's rowing team will next compete at the Knecht Cup, on Sat., March 31, in Camden N.J., on the Cooper River. The event will be hosted by Villanova.
