FORT MYERS, Fla. - Boston College scored an unprecedented five runs against the Red Sox but still fell short, losing 11-5 in an exhibition game Friday, March 2 in Fort Myers, Fla. The Eagles' best offensive production versus the major-leaguers prior to tonight's game was three (2000, 1999).
Captain Mike Hubbard paced the Eagle squad that matched the Sox with 11 hits, with a pair of singles. Hubbard's two-run single in the second blew just beyond the reach of former eagle and current Red Sox minor league second baseman, Mike Gambino. Gambino answered offensively, by hitting a two-run triple off his alma mater as part of a four-run, sixth inning for the hosts.
In a repeat performance of last year, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first, thanks to Jarett Mendoza's RBI single. Mendoza went a perfect 2-for-2 on the night. The Red Sox then scored three runs off three hits, highlighted by Brian Daubach's two-run triple off Eagle starter Erik Olson in the bottom half of that inning.
In the second, Hubbard's single knotted the score at three until the hosts pushed across a pair of runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Freshman Josh DiScipio knocked in a run in the sixth inning before the Sox scored four in the next at bat. The Eagles didn't give up as Joe McCabe grounded out to score David Trainor in the seventh to account for the final tally.
Rafael Betancourt earned the win and Mark Sullivan was saddled with the loss for the Eagles. Steve Lomasney and Mike Neill each homered for the Sox. Jeff Mackor also had two hits for BC.
BC plays Michigan in Lakeland, Fla. Saturday, March 3. Game time is 7 p.m.
