CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team wrapped up the 2001 fall season with the first annual Sonny Series. The seven-game series will be held annually in memory of Sonny Nictakis, who passed away in the summer of 2000 after a courageous seven-and-a-half year battle with Hodgkin's disease. Nictakis was a member of the Boston College baseball team from 1995-1999.
Unfortunately for the Gold team, the first annual Sonny Series did not go as planned. The Maroon team handed the Gold squad a four-game sweep.
Following the series, head coach Pete Hughes handed his fall postseason awards. Junior Matt Lederhos, who plays both pitcher and outfield, was named the team's most valuable player after batting .490. The most improved award went to first baseman Vinny Scavone and pitcher Matt O'Donnell. The top newcomer was pitcher Kevin Shepard and first and third baseman Kevin Shepard, who batted .370 over the four games.
The 2002 baseball schedule kicks off for Boston College on Saturday, February 16, against Delaware State in Davidson, N.C.
