Women's Cross Country Defends NCAA District I Title

BOSTON, Mass. - The Boston College women's cross country rebounded from its second-place performance at the 2001 BIG EAST Championship back on October 26 by winning the NCAA District I Qualifying meet on Saturday at Franklin Park.
By winning the qualifier, the Eagles earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, which will be run Monday, November 19, at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
Boston College blew away the competition on Saturday as it finished with a total score of 53. Providence College was the closest to dethroning the Eagles, but it finished with 95 points. Brown University, Cornell University and Yale University rounded out the top five.
From an individual standpoint for the Eagles, junior Maggie Guiney continued her hot streak. She took first place in the six-kilometer race, finishing with a time of 20:29. Guiney edged out Kate O'Neill of Yale and Boston College teammate Maria Cicero, who both finished with a time of 20:33. Despite finishing with the same time, O'Neill crossed the finish line first.
Senior Katie Ryan and junior Laura Smith also turned in strong performances for head coach Randy Thomas' squad. Ryan turned in sixth-place result, finishing with a time of 20:54, while Smith placed 14th with a time of 21:23. Rounding out the scoring finishers for Boston College was sophomore Jennifer Kramer, who turned in 29thth-place finish with a time of 21:38.
