Women's Cross Country Places 6th At NCAA Championship

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Even without the services of junior Cate Guiney, who was out with an injury, the Boston College women's cross country team capped off an incredible season by placing sixth at the 2001 NCAA Cross Country Championship at Furman University.
The Eagles, who placed fourth at the 2000 championship, finished with a total score of 231. Brigham Young University was crowned the 2001 team champion with 62 points, followed by North Carolina State (148), Georgetown (180), Arizona (194) and Stanford (206).
Leading the way individually for the Eagles was Cate's twin sister Maggie, who finished in 10th place with a time of 20:56. She was followed by freshman Maria Cicero, who finished in 16th spot, finishing with a time of 21:03. Both Guiney and Cicero earned All-America honors with their top-30 finishes.
Other scoring finishers for Boston College were junior Julie Spolidoro, who finished in 107th place but earned the Eagles 83rd-place points. Sophomore Jennifer Kramer turned in a solid run for Boston College, as she placed 119th, but earned 93rd-place points. The final runner for the Eagles was sophomore Jennifer Donovan, who did not figure into the team scoring, placed 183rd.
On another side note, head coach Randy Thomas was named NCAA Cross Country Coach of the Year by the United States Track and Field Coaches Association. Thomas and assistant Kathy Fleming were named Northeast Coaches of the Year and Cate Guiney earned Northeast Runner of the Year honors.
