Softball Finishes Fall Season At Beanpot

BOSTON - The softball team finished its fall ball season with softball's version of the Beanpot Tournament, earning a 3-2 record in five games on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 29-30.
On Saturday, the Eagles dropped their opening game, 2-1, to Harvard. Kimberly Ryan started, pitching 4.1 innings and striking out four. Tekae Malandris pitched the final 1.2 innings, also fanning four. At the plate, Alison Erbig went 2-for-3 and Erin Mackey went 1-for-3.
In the second game of the day, BC topped Providence, 2-1. Malandris pitched a complete game, striking out eight while allowing only two hits. Four Eagles went 1-for-3 at the plate, including Mackey, Erbig - who each had a run batted in, Lisa Field and Leah Kamataris.
On Sunday, Boston College defeated Boston University by a 2-1 margin. Malandris again took the mound for a complete game. She struck out nine, while allowing only one hit until the bottom of the seventh inning. The Terrier only managed three hits on the day. Erbig continued her hot hitting, going 2-for-3. Jen Asbury was 2-for-2 at the plate. Field and Cara Blumfield (two RBI) were 1-for-3.
The Eagles continued their winning streak with a 5-1 victory over Harvard. Ryan pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out six. Field went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Asbury (2-for-3, RBI), Blumfield (2-for-4, RBI), Mackey (1-for-4) and Michelle Daly (1-for-4, RBI) also had productive games. Jacqui Goodchild also drove in a run for the Eagles.
In the final game of the tournament, BC dropped a 5-3 decision to BU when the Terriers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Malandris threw the complete game, striking out six and taking a one-hitter into the final frame. Blumfield and Asbury were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Mackey (three RBI) and Field each went 1-for-3. Blumfield also scored two runs.
For the tournament, Asbury led all BC batters with a .500 average. Field hit .461, Erbig .428 and Blumfield .416 with three RBI. Erin Mackey batted .375 and also drove in four.
Boston College will officially open the 2002 season on Feb. 15-17 at the Texas A&M Tournament in College Station, Texas.
