BRONX, N.Y. - The Boston College men's cross country team was not able to achieve its season goal of finishing in the top six at the 2001 BIG EAST Championship, but it had several strong individual showings at Van Cortlandt Park. The men's team finished with a total score of 233, which was good enough for eighth place. The University of Notre Dame took home the team championship with a total score of 49, just edging out Villanova University, who finished with 52 points.
Senior Colin Wolfe improved on last year's 31st-place finish as he finished 21st at this year's championship. Wolfe turned in a time of 25:33, which was only one second from a top-20 finish. Notre Dame's David Alber finished in the 20th spot, finishing with a time of 25:32.
Sophomore Byron Gartrell had an incredible turnaround from his 2000 BIG EAST performance at this year's meet. Gartrell, who finished 84th last year, turned in a time this year of 26:17, which was good enough for 42nd place.
The final three scorers for Boston College all had solid runs. Senior Nathan Buttrick, freshman Ryan Burke and senior Steve Lester finished 55th, 62nd and 64th, respectively. Buttrick finished with a time 26:48, Burke ran to a time of 26:57 and Lester completed the race in 27:06.
