Gionta Tallies Assist In U.S. Hockey Loss

Boston College forward Brian Gionta assisted on the only U.S. goal as the United States dropped a 4-1 decision to Slovakia in the quarterfinal round of the 2000 IIHF World Championship in St. Petersburg, Russia.
With the loss, the Americans are eliminated from the tournament. The United States had a 3-0-2 record through the preliminary and qualifying rounds. Slovakia advances to play Finland in the semifinals.
The United States opened the scoring at 3:55 of the first period on Darby Hendrickson's first goal of the tournament. Hendrickson snared Gionta's rebound and lifted it over the glove of Slovak goalie Jan Lasak.
The Americans led 1-0 after one period, but Slovakia answered with three goals in the first four minutes of the second period to take control. The Slovaks scored their final goal at 9:04 of the third period.
The United States outshot Slovakia, 21-18.
