Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - In the bottom of the seventh (and final) inning, Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.) singled through the right side to score Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) and give Boston College a 6-5 victory over Brown University Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader at Chestnut Hill. The Eagles rang up eight runs for an 8-1 decision in the nightcap. BC has won five consecutive games, improving to 17-9 overall while dropping the Bears to 10-16.
With the score knotted at five in their last at bat, the Eagles loaded the bases after Gambino singled then advanced on Mike Quirk's (Paxton, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.), after homering to left field in the third inning, was intentionally walked. Then Brian Chase issued Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) a free pass to set the stage for McCarthy's pinch-hit, game-winning single.
Langone went 2-for-2 in that game, including the deep ball and sacrifice fly. Gambino had two hits and scored two runs. Mike Hubbard's (Braintree, Mass.) single up the middle in the second inning drove in two of his three RBIs in that game. That hit trimmed the Bears' lead to 4-2.
Jed Rogers (Westerly, R.I.) tagged the win, after relieving Chris Gannon (Arlington, Mass.), who started the game. Rogers pitched a no-hitter in the remaining three frames with two strikeouts.
In game two, the Eagles collected eight runs on 11 hits while limiting the Bears to one run on three hits.
Both Mike Gambino and Chris Rosado (Stamford, Conn.) tripled, and teammate Mike Quirk doubled twice.
BC took a 2-1 lead after 2.5 innings but then poured in four runs in the bottom of the third. Gambino singled up the middle, advanced on Quirk's groundout then scored on Langone's hit. Mendoza drew a walk to move Langone to second, and Kealty doubled to right field, plating two more BC runs. Eric Olson (Oakland, Calif.) knocked in Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) on a single to center field, granting BC breathing room at 6-1.
Paul Knapic (Bayside, N.Y.) allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work for the win. Matt Duffey (San Antonio, Texas) threw two hitless innings.
BC travels to Notre Dame this weekend (April 8-9). The Saturday game begins at noon.
