Baseball Falls To UMass 4-1 In Beanpot

PAWTUCKET, R.I. - Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) hit a solo home run in the ninth inning as Boston College fell 4-1 to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Monday in the 11th annual Beanpot Tournament at McCoy Stadium. The Minutemen improved to 17-15-1 while dropping BC to 27-14 overall.
Patrick Reedy pitched a complete game for UMass. He scattered five hits in 9.0 innings with a pair of walks and strikeouts.
Jaime Quiros (Jamaica Plain, Mass.), who recorded the loss, pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits with five walks. Brendan Nolan (Swampscott, Mass.) struck out three and allowed three hits in 4.0 innings of relief.
Third baseman Aaron Senez went 3-for-4, and first baseman Kevin O'Connell was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead all UMass hitters. O'Connell's two stolen bases contributed to a team total of seven on the day.
BC's first baseman Steve Langone picked up a pair of hits including his fourth home run of the season and third home run in the Beanpot tournament (two homers in 1999). Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.), Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.) and Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.) each had a hit.
UMass scored its first three runs, all with two outs. O'Connell and Senez belted RBI singles in the first inning for the 2-0 advantage. Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) put out Gavin Clark at the plate to prevent a run in the second. Then Shaun Skeffington scored on an error by Mike Quirk.
The Minutemen added another run in the fifth before Nolan fanned two consecutive batters, and Mackor caught Chris Morgan trying to steal home to end the inning.
BC meets Harvard in the consolation round Tuesday (April 25) at Fenway Park. Game time is 11 a.m.
