BOSTON - Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.) drove in three runs to lead Boston College 8-5 over Harvard University in the 11th Annual Beanpot Tournament Tuesday at Fenway Park. The Eagles improved their school-record mark to 28-14 overall while dropping the Crimson to 15-19.
In the first inning, Quirk tripled to the ?Triangle? in right center, knocking home Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.). Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.), who had a double and single on the day, then grounded out to the short stop, plating Quirk for the 2-0 lead out of the gate.
Quirk added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, which was part of a four-run, five-hit BC effort that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead. Gambino, Langone and Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.) each drove in a run in that frame.
Harvard's Josh San Salvador singled in Nick Carter, who doubled to lead off the sixth inning. But BC stormed back with two runs in the bottom half of that inning, thanks to Quirk's RBI single and an error by the first baseman that brought the Paxton native across the plate.
Mark Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) improved his record to 3-0. The sophomore right hander allowed three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings of relief. Mike Stuart (Canton, Mass.) struck out two in the ninth and gave up two hits for his second save of the season.
Mike Madden recorded the loss for Harvard. He gave up six runs on five hits with four strikeouts. BC's Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Mark Mager and Nick Carter each picked up a pair of hits for Harvard.
BC plays at Georgetown for a doubleheader Saturday (April 29). Game time is noon.
