Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - Boston College sluggers collected a season-high 21 hits to defeat host Holy Cross 13-2 Wednesday in Worcester. BC is now 25-13 overall - one win away from tying last season's record-breaking victory total - while the Crusaders dropped to 13-16.
BC hitters have amassed 19 hits on two previous occasions (Monmouth and Villanova), but, Wednesday marked the first time that the Eagles have accumulated 20-plus hits in one game this season.
Ten different BC players contributed to the slugfest led by Mike Gambino's (Garrison, N.Y.) and Chris Rosado's (Stamford, Conn.) 4-for-5 efforts. Half of Rosado's hits went for doubles. Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles as well.
Chris Gannon (Arlington, Mass.) earned his second win on the hill for the Eagles. He allowed two runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) and Matt Duffey (San Antonio, Texas) each pitched a hitless inning of relief.
In pinch hit appearances, Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) and Aaron Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif.) each contributed a home run. Both dingers came in BC's eight-run effort in the top of the seventh inning. Macchi followed up singles by Gambino and Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) with his home run off John Quinn. Langone doubled to right center then Holy Cross relief pitcher got Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) to fly out to right field, advancing Langone to third, who then scored on Rosado's double down the left field line. Sabo's round tripper drove in two runs to make the score 10-0. The scoring didn't end there as Daniel Lucey issued pinch hitter Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.) a free pass then gave up an RBI triple to Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.). Hubbard (one RBI), Gambino and Macchi belted consecutive singles before Vinny Scavone grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Holy Cross' Peter Summa and Scott Petersen each powered a home run in the bottom of the seventh to account for the Crusaders' two runs.
BC hosts St. John's University for a doubleheader Thursday (April 20). Game time is noon.
