BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH SETON HALL

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - Eric Olson (Oakland, Calif.) had the game-winning RBI to lift Boston College 9-8 over visiting Seton Hall Saturday in the second, extra-innings contest of the afternoon. The Pirates won the first game 7-3 on the strength of home runs by Joe Cuervo and Joe Scott in the ninth inning. BC improved to 24-12 and 6-8 in the BIG EAST conference, and Seton Hall is now 23-10 and 7-4 in the loop.
Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.), who was 4-for-8 on the day, led off the 11th inning of game two with a double to left field. He advanced to third on Jarett Mendoza's (North Dighton, Mass.) sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for Olson's game-winning stroke.
Senior Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) pitched 3.2 innings allowing one hit and no runs with five strikeouts to earn the win for the Eagles. Shawn Tarkington was tagged with the loss. He allowed three runs (two earned) and seven hits in 3.2 innings.
The Pirates scored four runs on two hits and two errors in the eighth to take an 8-7 lead before Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) singled through the left side to score Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) in the bottom of that inning for the tie.
Third baseman Eric Olson went 3-for-6 while Mike Gambino, McCarthy and Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.)- who led off the second with a home run - each contributed two hits in the nightcap. Brian Leighton powered SHU's only round tripper in that game.
In the opening contest, the Eagles climbed back from a 3-2 deficit in their last at bat to force an extra frame. Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.) hit a one-out single, advanced on Mike Wren's error and scored on McCarthy's single through the right side for the 3-3 tie. McCarthy and junior Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) each drilled two hits in that game.
Cuervo and Scott hit back-to-back, two-out home runs off Langone in the top of the ninth inning for the 7-3 victory. Cuervo's dinger, one of three hits in the game, was good for three runs.
SHU's Jeff Miller and Tony Calabrese each contributed two hits to the visitors' 11-hit cause. Scott Zadina improved to 2-0 on the hill while Mike Stuart (Canton, Mass.) fell to 2-3.
BC hosts Seton Hall Sunday (April 16) as SHU Head Coach Mike Sheppard vyes for his 900th career win. Game time is noon.
