Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Freshman Jennifer Asbury singled home classmate Cara Blumfield with the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead Boston College to a 4-3 win over Harvard, capping a doubleheader sweep.
The Eagles (13-14) won the first game, 2-0, behind a stellar performance from hurler Kimberly Ryan. The freshman went six innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven. Brooke Shull pitched the seventh inning to earn the save.
Boston College got the only run it would need in game one in the first inning, as Blumfield led off with an infield single, advanced to second on a bunt by Anne Marie Ambros, and scored on a single by Asbury. Chris Vicari scored the other Boston College run on a sixth-inning RBI single by Cristin Brown.
In the nightcap, Harvard took a 3-0 lead on Boston College starter Lauren Fischetti, but the Eagles came back with three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Blumfield walked and scored on a wild pitch to get BC on the board. Leah Kamataris, pinch-running for Asbury, scored on a sacrifice by Fischetti, and Vicari came home on a single by Summer Jarratt.
Blumfield singled to left with one out in the fifth, and after Julie Ulbrich was thrown out at home for the second out on a single by Ambros, Asbury knocked Blumfield home for the winning run. Ryan pitched the final 5 2/3 innings to earn her eighth win.
Boston College will be back in action on Saturday, April 15 when 21st-ranked Notre Dame comes to town for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
