April 8, 2000 - The men's lacrosse team fell victim to a bit of history at the University of Albany's Varsity Field on Saturday afternoon. With their 15-9 victory over the Eagles, the Great Danes posted their first win as a Division I program.
Trailing 4-1 late in the first period, Boston College (1-5) rallied to take a 6-5 lead on an extra-man goal by junior Tom Smith (Simsbury, CT). The Eagles led 7-6 with 11:17 remaining in the third, but Dan Small scored two of the game's next three goals to put Albany (1-3) ahead for the duration.
The game stayed tight throughout the third and into the fourth, but the Great Danes scored six unanswered goals to put the game out of reach.
Highlighting the Eagles' effort was senior captain Jason Wren (Sudbury, MA), who paced the Eagles offensive attack with four goals. Junior Andy Koch (Rye, N.Y.) chipped in two goals and two assists, while senior Dan Hayden (Lakewood, OH) notched a goal and two assists.
Senior captain Tom Gallagher (Point Lookout, N.Y.) stopped a season-high 21 shots.
