CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Boston College men's lacrosse team opens the 2001 campaign Saturday, March 3, in a game against the University of Hartford. The game will be played at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass and is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
The season opener marks the start of head coach Dave Curnick's second season at the helm of the lacrosse program. Coming off the heels of a 2-9 record a season ago, the Eagles are optimistic about the prospects of this year's squad. Much of that optimism can be attributed to the solid skillset, leadership, and experience of the senior class.
Senior tri-captains Mike Adair (New Canaan, Conn.), Dan Doucette (Newton, Mass.), and Brendan Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) are set to lead the team toward success in 2001. Adair, in the process of making the move from midfield to attack, will be asked to take his aggressive moves to the goal and shoulder a brunt of the offensive load. Defensemen Doucette and Sullivan, both blessed with great vision and field awareness, will anchor Curnick's defensive unit.
Joining Adair on attack will be senior Andy Koch (Rye, N.Y.) and junior Matthew Safaii (Cold Springs Harbor, N.Y.). Koch was an offensive leader a season ago. His skillset includes a keen awareness around the crease and a great nose for the ball. Safaii, coming off an injury-plagued sophomore campaign, looks to stay clear of the injury bug and enjoy a breakout junior season.
Roaming the midfield will be the quick and dangerous senior James Garth (Fort Worth, Texas). He is a solid open-field player, who brings a high level of excitement to the game. Joining Garth will be fellow senior Nick Hayman (Washington, D.C.), who looks to come on strong after enduring an injury-riddled 2000 season. Fifth-year senior Tom Smith (Simsbury, Conn.) will be asked to provide consistent leadership, while continuing to develop into a solid offensive threat. Senior standout Taylor Whitman (Oldwick, N.J.) and his strong moves to the cage should provide a spark for the offensive attack.
Junior James Karambay (Newington, Conn.) will serve as the last line of the Eagles' defense. He will be looked upon to fill the shoes of the departed Tom Gallagher, who was a seasoned standout throughout his time at Boston College.
The Eagles, faced with a challenging schedule, look to make headway on a local, regional, and national level. Given the leadership and experience of the senior class, one can reason that Boston College is headed toward a successful campaign in 2001.
