Baseball Gains Two Wins Against Albany

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Jaime Quiros pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts to blank Albany 1-0 in the first game of the twinbill Tuesday in Chestnut Hill. Jed Rogers recorded the win in the nightcap's 4-1 decision, helping BC to its third consecutive victory. BC is 20-11-0, while the Great Danes dropped to 6-13-1.
In a career performance, Quiros allowed three hits, walked one and struck out 10 in 7.0 innings of work to earn his first decision of the season. BC's game winning hit came in the second frame. Jarett Mendoza doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on the 7-6 throw to home that got Neal McCarthy out at the plate. Eric Olson doubled down the right field line to drive in Mendoza. Jeff Mackor flied out to center field to end the inning.
Mendoza went 2-for-2, batting sixth in the order in game one. BC managed only three hits in six innings off losing pitcher Scott Tower, who struck out four with no walks.
Like game one, BC scored all of its runs early in the nightcap. On the first inning's second pitch, leadoff hitter Mike Gambino homered down the left field line - his second home run in four games - to give BC a 1-0 edge. McCarthy walked and advanced on Steve Langone's single. Joe Kealty doubled, knocking in McCarthy and moving Langone to third. Groundouts by Mendoza and Chris Rosado scored two runs for the 4-0 BC advantage.
Albany answered with one run in the top of the second inning. Jim Lovett walked, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch then scored on an error by BC shortstop Mike Hubbard.
The Great Danes outhit the Eagles 7-3, led by Steve Checksfield's two-hit effort. Albany stranded 14 men on base.
Rogers pitched four innings with four strikeouts, four walks and no earned runs for the Eagles. Matt Duffey threw two innings of relief, setting the stage for Mike Stuart's save performance.
The Eagles host Vermont on Wednesday, April 12 in a doubleheader as BC head coach Pete Hughes goes for his 100th career victory. Game time is 2 p.m.
