Baseball Takes Doubleheader From Vermont

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - Boston College amassed 23 hits in a two-game sweep of Vermont Wednesday in Chestnut Hill to earn BC Head Coach Pete Hughes his 100th career victory. For the third time this season, BC has won five games in a row. BC defeated the Catamounts 6-3 in game one then 9-6 in the nightcap. The hosts improved to 22-11 overall while dropping UVM to 15-10.
In the first game, Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.) hit 3-for-3 with two doubles to lead all Eagles, offensively. Three other beantown sluggers picked up two hits, including Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.), Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.), Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) and Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.), who smashed a two-run home run in the third . Kealty's two-run double in the same frame helped BC to a four-run effort and 5-0 lead at the end of three.
Chris Gannon (Arlington, Mass.) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts to earn his first decision. Freshman Matt Duffey (San Antonio, Texas) allowed no hits and fanned one in the seventh to get the save.
Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.), Eric Olson (Oakland, Calif.) and Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) each contributed a round tripper for BC's nine-run effort in the second game. Langone went 2-of-3 for three RBIs. Olson also had two hits in addition to Mike Quirk, who was a perfect 5-for-5 on the day. Left fielder Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) turned in a perfect game with a 3-for-3 effort, highlighted by one double at the plate.
Mark Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) got the win on the hill for BC. He did not surrender a hit and fanned four of the 10 batters he faced in 3.0 innings.
Dennis Moser singled to knock in one run, and Mark Denzine ripped a two-run double to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the third. Eric Olson led off BC's six-run, fourth inning with a home run to left field. Macchi then singled and scored on Mike Hubbard's (Braintree, Mass.) triple. Quirk smacked a two-run double, followed by Langone's RBI double. In his second appearance at the plate in that frame, Olson hit an RBI double to center to score Langone.
BC plays at Harvard Thursday April 13. Game time is 3 p.m.
