Princeton, N.J. - The Boston College softball team broke an early-season skid by winning three of four and taking home the championship at the Princeton Invitational.
The Eagles (3-8) were led by a strong weekend from freshman second baseman Jennifer Asbury, who hit .538 (7-for-13) with two home runs and six runs batted in.
In the tourney opener, Gretchen Thompson's three-run triple keyed a six-run fifth inning and senior pitcher Lauren Fischetti gave up just three hits in an 8-0 win over Temple.
Princeton handed the Eagles a 1-0 loss in the second Saturday game, as Brie Galicinao allowed just two Boston College hits.
Boston College rebounded on Sunday, defeating Fairfield, 9-1, to reach the championship game. Asbury was 3-for-3 with four RBI, homering in the first and fourth innings and stroking a two-run single in the second. Fischetti picked up her second win, scattering seven hits and striking out six.
In the tournament final, the Eagles avenged their only loss of the weekend, topping the host Tigers, 6-4. In the fourth inning, Boston College scored two runs to break a 3-3 tie and seal the victory. Senior Julie Ulbrich reached on an error and stole second to lead off the inning, then advanced to third when Summer Jarratt fouled out. Asbury plated Ulbrich with an RBI single, and came across with the winning run on a double by Chris Vicari, who was 3-for-4 in the title game. Sophomore Brooke Shull earned her first win of the year, allowing five hits in five innings. Freshman Kimberly Ryan pitched the final two innings to close the game out.
The Eagles will play their home opener on Tuesday, Mar. 28, as they face Holy Cross in an afternoon doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
