CHARLESTON, S.C. - Boston College kicked off the 2000 season by splitting its games against host College of Charleston Saturday. The Eagles took the first nine-inning game 13-6 then dropped the next game 4-3. The two teams square off Sunday at 11 a.m. for two, 7-inning contests.
Andy Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) pitched five solid innings, allowing no earned runs while striking out two in the first game. Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) went 4-for-5, including two home runs and a double to drive in four. Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) also gave a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with one round tripper. Catcher Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) accounted for BC's other home run.
BC scored nine runs in the first four innings, capped by a six-run, fourth-inning effort. College of Charleston then answered with three runs in each of the next two innings. However, the Eagles put to rest any Cougar hopes for a comeback by exploding for four runs total in the last two innings.
The Eagles tied the second game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning on the strength of Jarett Mendoza's third home run of the day. But C of C responded with two runs in that inning. In the eighth, Mendoza doubled to drive in Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) but the Eagles could not muster another run as C of C held on for the 4-3 win.
Senior pitcher Brendan Nolan (Swampscott, Mass.), who struck out two and allowed two runs, absorbed the loss on the mound for the Eagles. Langone hit three doubles in four at bats in that game.
After two games, Mendoza leads all Eagles with a .667 batting average. He is 6-for-9 with two doubles and three home runs. Durkin ranks second, batting .556 with five hits in nine at bats.
